EXHIBITIONS | How the idea of home living changes http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2024/01/08/exhibitions-how-the-idea-of-home-living-changes/ http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2024/01/08/exhibitions-how-the-idea-of-home-living-changes/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2024 01:18:58 +0000 http://en.homelifestyle.cn/?p=3011 Some of the most leading international designers addressed the theme of the new forms of contemporary living at the Road to Salone 2024. Here’s a brief run-down.

What’s in a lamp?, Foscarini, Luca Font

  • What forms has contemporary living adopted?
  • How has the concept of home evolved over the last few years?
  • How have domestic habits changed?
  • How are they likely to change over the next few decades?
  • What challenges do domestic spaces face right now in order to become more “habitable.”

Our idea of home living is not set in stone but is subject to constant change. In any case, cities are becoming increasingly dynamic, technological and oriented towards the future, influencing our idea of home living.

Cities these days are focused on sustainability with a view to improving their urban layout and making spaces more efficient, liveable and integrated with each other, on a human scale. Within this context, design represents a lens through which reality and its trajectories can be read, laying bare unprecedented consumer needs and habits.

The new objects that populate domestic spaces are characterised by their future-oriented design, also in a more concrete sense – along with design and functionality, durability is an essential parameter when it comes to greater sustainability. Change has therefore become the leitmotif, along with increasingly present technological development, simplifying everyday processes and improving contemporary living.

At Road to Salone 2024, the road trip through Europe and the United States, which gave an initial taster of the 62nd edition of the Salone del Mobile, the subject of contemporary living was central to the meetings with international designers, who threw original and enriching light on this particular theme.

At the Cheval Blanc Paris, a historic Parisian building which revisited by Peter Marino, the famous designer Patrick Jouin underscored the fact that home living is in constant evolution, a key concept for the Salone del Mobile: “The number of family members changes, we’re living longer, and we become more attached to our homes as we get older. The Salone del Mobile is the place for staying in touch with these ongoing evolutions – what we learned in design and architecture schools is no longer 100% sufficient. We need to stay updated and adaptable, understand life in a broader, deeper sense. As a designer, I can say that you always need to strike a balance, and not be alarmed by the changes. Then you also need to know how to play it.”

The London leg, which took place at the 5-star Bulgari London Hotel, which opened in 2012, designed by Antonio Citterio, featured the British designers  Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. In their presentation, the duo highlighted the fact that the last few years have been crucial in accelerating the processes of change: “Precisely because people spend more time at home than in the past, it has to be capable of serving a number of different functions. What we have found is the increasing rejection of rooms designed for a single function, in favour of larger, free spaces that by their very nature contain an element of multi-functionality. Spaces that are increasingly changeable and adaptable according to the different times of the day.”

At the Hotel Wilmina in Berlin, a former women’s prison, the German designer Konstantin Grcic, underscored the fact that change cuts across different places and different cultures: “You can’t just talk about a single trend. The concept of home living is multifaceted and carries a different meaning in every culture – if we think about Asia, we realise that the spaces are smaller and more intimate compared to those in Berlin, where they are considerably larger. This also applies to the distinction between public and private, which varies a lot from culture to culture.” Grcic emphasised the centrality of the Salone del Mobile’s role as an opportunity to share ideas, concepts and trends: “The Salone is a physical space, it’s real, which is why it’s an unmissable destination.”

In Denmark, at Villa Copenhagen, a hotel in the former Danish Post and Telegraph Company building, Luca Nichetto’s design project put the accent on the return of living spaces characterised by rooms with well-defined functions: “The concept of home living has changed a great deal over the last few years, the last ten in particular. We’ve moved from the open space concept to the realisation that designated rooms work  better. I hope to see fewer trends, rather a return to greater personalisation of spaces.” According to the Danish designer Felicia Arvid, the concept of home living has been transformed, making for a more permeable relationship between public and private spaces. Arvid emphasised the centrality of the Salone when it comes to “exploring the present whilst gleaning an idea of the future.”

“DESIGN SHANGHAI TALENTS 2023” RETURNS http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2023/06/10/design-shanghai-talents-2023-returns/ http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2023/06/10/design-shanghai-talents-2023-returns/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2023 02:39:04 +0000 http://en.homelifestyle.cn/?p=2935 “Design Shanghai TALENTS 2023” will be launching a “new” edition from June 8th to 11th at the Shanghai Pudong World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center! This year marks the tenth anniversary of Design Shanghai’s journey. Over the past decade, Design Shanghai has consistently showcased pioneering works from domestic and international design brands to global audiences, providing a unique platform for communication and trade. It has facilitated the establishment of long-term business relationships between brands and Asia’s most influential architects, interior designers, real estate developers, procurement managers, and private buyers. Design Shanghai has broken new ground in the evolving Asian design industry, setting an industry benchmark.

The “TALENTS” exhibition area originated from the background and resources of Design Shanghai and garnered industry attention when it was first introduced in 2020. “TALENTS” actively encourages self-expression and self-development of young designers, showcasing the diverse design voices of China’s new generation. In order to better support the growth of contemporary young designers and gradually complete the design ecosystem, “TALENTS” focuses on the differences in the design field between China and developed economies. It upholds the brand value of designing with a focus on “people” and provides young designers with professional career guidance.

Building on the success of the previous two editions of “TALENTS,” the 2023 edition will continue to invite Frank Chou, the designer and founder of FRANK CHOU DESIGN STUDIO, as the curator. The event will utilize the form of a “banquet,” a social gathering that is customary and represents unique expressions of “China relations.” Through a seated circle setting, the event aims to inspire creative works and discussions that deeply represent the modern attributes of China.

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Design Shanghai, the “TALENTS” exhibition area has undergone a comprehensive brand upgrade through the joint efforts of Design Shanghai, curator Frank Chou, and graphic designer Zhong Yi. The overall logo of TALENTS combines a graphic element with the typography of the word “TALENTS.” The graphic element resembles a “#” symbol, formed by intertwining the initials “T,” symbolizing TALENTS’ mission to help young designers grow faster and better by gathering and connecting designers with industry, academia, and research resources, and establishing and improving a design ecosystem based on the current situation in China. The typography is based on a simple and strongly industrial geometric sans-serif font while transforming the sharp uppercase “A” into a more calligraphic lowercase “a.” These details aim to better represent our expectations for future design with a sense of warmth and a more humanistic attitude.

The 2023 edition of Design Shanghai “TALENTS” has selected 22 groups/individuals as TALENTS through a strict admission mechanism, including 6 groups of past participants, 16 groups of first-time participants, and 1 group of overseas participants. The selection process fully considers young creators from multiple fields, including commercial design, art design, and conceptual design.

To help TALENTS expand the boundaries of design and explore market needs, the 2023 “TALENTS” has invited seven industry professionals—Aldo Cibic, Chi Wing Lo, Shen Baohong, Jamy Yang, Cao Feng, Zhu Hui, and Wang Xu—to form a strong mentorship team. They will provide young designers with more professional and effective career guidance, with a deeper focus on designing for people. Additionally, the 2023 “TALENTS” has introduced an award category for the first time, evaluating from four dimensions: “Best Theme Design,” “Best Commercial Product Design,” “Best Experimental Product Design,” and “Best Art Product Design.” Over twenty professional media representatives have been invited to the exhibition site to vote for the “Most Media Attention Award.” The winners will be announced and awarded in the “TALENTS” exhibition area on the morning of June 9th. The establishment of these awards aims to explore the potential and prospects of designers through their works.

Furthermore, Design Shanghai will continue to create various supporting design activities and workshops during and after the exhibition, promoting communication and collaboration between young designers and the design industry. It aims not only to communicate and promote in a language understandable to the market but also to actively facilitate dialogue and cooperation between young designers and the design industry, providing comprehensive support to each Talent.

Salone del Mobile.Milano successfully closed its 61st edition http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2023/04/25/salone-del-mobile-milano-successfully-closed-its-61st-edition/ http://en.homelifestyle.cn/2023/04/25/salone-del-mobile-milano-successfully-closed-its-61st-edition/#respond Tue, 25 Apr 2023 23:28:33 +0000 http://en.homelifestyle.cn/?p=2921 More than 2,000 exhibiting brands took part, 34% of them from 37 different countries, including 550 young designers from 31 different countries and 28 design schools and universities from 18 different countries. In terms of visitor turnout, 307,418 attendees were recorded (+15% compared with 2022), over the six days, from 181 different countries. Particularly significant was the fact that 65% of the buyers and industry professionals had come from abroad. China reclaimed its place as the top country after Italy, followed by Germany, France, the United States, with Spain and Brazil tied. There were over 5,400 accredited journalists, 47% of whom were from other countries.

Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, had this to say: “The 61st edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano was an international success and we are really delighted that it exceeded expectations. The number of attendees makes for an exceptional result, which we worked very hard, deeply and radically for, to bring new meanings and values to the trade fair visit and create new experiences for the visitors who came along. We have learned several important lessons from this edition: we have learned that it is indeed possible to redesign a huge event like the Salone in order to propel it into the future, that sustainability really is achievable when the entire system pulls together, and that new content can be devised and employed in order to generate knowledge, growth and value. We are pleased at how we managed to put visitors at the centre, and at how they found their own way around, the facility with which they met their desired companies; with the opportunity the exhibitors had to introduce themselves and make themselves known not just to their target groups but also to new interlocutors with whom they came into contact thanks to the new layout; and to have provided opportunities for everybody at the fair to further their knowledge and growth thanks to the many talks and round tables and the exhibitions at Euroluce. We invested in quality and demonstrated our desire to carry on producing innovation and ‘telling the stories’ of our companies and our products. Yet again we have been the engine that has fired up the city. The contribution of the Italian Trade Agency ICE has been invaluable and irreplaceable, supporting us as we have opened out to new markets such as India, and growing markets such as America. Digital has also played a vital role this week, as it did the preceding months, allowing us both to make contact with new countries and to maintain a strong relationship with those unable to join us. I should like to thank everybody for their commitment: the companies who took part and put their money on their products, the organisers, the fitters and the curators who all put their faith in the event. We believe that everyone could feel the enthusiasm and the desire to provide a new, global and aware experience, in which it was the ideas and the cultural exchange that mattered, conscious that the way to build value over time is to think of the future and of the upcoming generations with SaloneSatellite.”
